SNAP Challenge 2014

SNAPFood.jpgDuring Hunger Action Month, take the SNAP Challenge and walk in the shoes of the more than 1 million men, women and children in Cook County who receive SNAP assistance. Participants are asked to live on $35 of food for one week - the average weekly SNAP benefit for an individual in Illinois. Challenge participants are forced to make grocery choices on a limited budget, and often realize how difficult it is to avoid hunger, afford nutritious foods, and stay healthy with too few resources.

Check out a timeline of the SNAP Challenge week with live updates, photos and insight from Challenge participants.

SNAP Challenge Guidelines

1. Each person should spend a set amount for food and beverages during the Challenge week. That amount is $35/week or $5/day for all food and beverage.

2. All food purchased and eaten during the Challenge week, including dining out, must be included in the total spending.

3. During the Challenge, only eat food that you purchase for the project. Do not eat food that you already own (this does not include spices and condiments).

4. Avoid accepting free food from friends, family, or at work, including at receptions, briefings or other events where food is served.

5. Keep track of receipts on food spending and take note of your experiences throughout the week.

6. Invite others to join you, including co-workers, family and friends.

7. Share your experiences with us on social media using the hashtag #SNAPChallenge and be sure to tag @fooddepository in your posts on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
